ONCE, AS A CHILD, I WAS CAUGHT IN A RAINSTORM WHILE PLAYING IN A PARK. SUDDENLY, THE SKY DARKENED AND THE WIND SWEPT everything-dirt, loose tree branches, scraps of paper-off the ground. Thunder crashed while lightning flashed in the distance. Luckily there was a pavilion nearby, and I ran toward it.
With its sloping roof, the old pavilion sheltered me, even though its sides were wide open. There, on this little island of refuge, I watched and waited for the weather to clear. But soon, sheets of cold rain slashed right through the pavilion, soaking me to the bone. I realized there was no safety here-the storm had engulfed everything.
