Ángel Pinzón paused in the middle where the road to Ozumacín connected with a narrow opening that took him out to his ranch of "Las Vírgenes" He combed the horse's mane and threw his sombrero back as if to let people know who he was, just in case, since his instincts, quite pronounced after years and years of vigilance and waiting, were telling him that at least four or six or perhaps more men were waiting to pounce on him in that very spot. He didn't see anyone, but he could almost feel their breathing. Besides, he expected that it would happen sooner or later, and if not there, then in any other place. What he couldn't understand was the reason they had waited so long, since even the colt seemed irritated, gesturing and circling around on itself, clearly wanting to set off toward its watering holes.
Finally, Ángel Pinzón stood on the stirrups and shouted for all to hear: "Let's get this over with, you hijos de su mal dormir! I only ask that you not shoot at my head! And to hell with the mother of anyone who does! You all hear me!
