"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. " / (Matthew 5: 8)
On the side of a hill overlooking the Sea of Galilee, Jesus continued his teaching on human happiness. "Blessed are the pure in heart," he said, "for they will see God" (Matt. 5: 8). Jesus' first-century Second Temple Jewish audience would have known that the only way to see God was in the temple, in the Shekinah glory in the Holy of Holies. Only the high priest could enter there, and only once a year. He would be required to have perfect ritual purity and cleanliness.
