I AM a doctor of medicine, John Strong by name, and I write this story, in the year 18--, less with the thought of publication than for the comfort of mind which such occupation may chance to bring me. She whom I have loved more than other women has left Australia for ever. I am thankful to say under happy circumstances for her, but otherwise for me.
I propose to tell the story, which has enveloped so many of us in its strange happenings, from the beginning, just as it occurred, not anticipating what came to my knowledge afterward, but in simple language I desire to chronicle, so far as I have been able to obtain particulars from others as well as of my own knowledge, one of the strangest and saddest stories of early Australian days.
