THE task of selecting the winners of the ten prizes, of one guinea each, offered in our December number for the best solutions of the mystery left unexplained by the authors of "The Secret of Emu Plain,'' has proved no light one. Of the three hundred and eighty--six competitors who essayed the solution of the problem, only four actually indicated the use of a kite, and one of these four, Mr. F. M. Holmes, being a contributor to CASSELL'S MAGAZINE, was hors concours.
Many competitors sent with their solutions letters which spoke of the interest which the unexplained problem had aroused, and attempts to solve it came from every country of Europe as well as from the Far West of the United States, the West Indies, Canada, India, and Australia.
