Homily, Easter Vigil-April 15, 2001.

The road traveled tonight, through centuries of promises born of the saving heart of God, culminates in a rebuke and an announcement: "Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but he has been raised" (Lk 24: 5-6). This rebuke awakens the women from error and deception, and the announcement redirects their lives. As the Gospel indicates, it is a moment of bewilderment and fear for these women who, with much love for Jesus, go early to anoint his dead body. Confusion and fear had already taken hold of them when "they found the stone rolled away from the tomb; but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus" (v. 2-3).
