Homily, Twenty-Fifth Youth Pilgrimage to Luján-October 3, 1999.

We heard how Jesus looked at his Mother. From the cross, he looked at her and pointed to all of us saying: "This is your Son, these are your children. " And Mary, feeling Jesus' gaze, must have remembered when she was young, thirty or so years earlier, when she felt another gaze that made her sing with joy: the gaze of the Father. And she felt that the Father had looked at her smallness. Little Mary, our Mother whom we came to see, and engage her gaze today and be engaged by her gaze. Because her look is like the continuation of the gaze of the Father who saw her smallness and made her the Mother of God; like the gaze of the Son on the cross that made her into our Mother; and with that gaze she looks at us today. And today we, after a long journey, come to this place of rest, because the Virgin's gaze is a place of rest, and we come to tell her our concerns.
