Abu al-ʻAlaʼ al-Maʻarri was a 12th-century Arab poet and philosopher from Maarrat al-Nu'man, Syria. He was born around 973 AD and died around 1057 AD. Al-Maʻarri was a blind poet who wrote in Arabic, and his works include poetry, essays, and philosophical treatises. His writing often dealt with themes of morality, ethics, and the human condition.
