However, Mary denies leaving the house that night, casting suspicion on Holder. The inquest uncovers that Old Man Newton had visited Fernhead Towers, where Captain Ledbury was staying, and had a heated confrontation with him. Despite this, Captain Ledbury has an alibi for the time of the murder, as he was seen boarding a train to York. The case against him collapses, leaving the murder unsolved. The "man in the corner" proposes a theory that the real culprit is Lord Walterton, Mervin Ledbury's brother, who had recently been elevated to the peerage. He suggests that Mary and the villagers were unaware of Lord Walterton's new title, leading to a case of mistaken identity. The theory posits that Lord Walterton, fearing scandal, met Old Man Newton in the lane and killed him in a fit of rage when the old man attempted to blackmail him. The story concludes with the "man in the corner" lamenting the lack of common sense in the investigation, which failed to consider the possibility of Lord Walterton's involvement, leaving the Ayrsham murder an unsolved mystery.
