At the Farm by David Cory (1970)
The narrative follows Cocky Doodle, Henny Penny, and Little Jack Rabbit as they venture to the Old Farm. Little Jack Rabbit, a small bunny, is warned by his mother to be cautious of the farmer. Cocky Doodle reassures her that the farmer is kind. Upon arriving at the farmyard, they encounter Turkey Tim and Goosey Lucy, who are curious about Little Jack Rabbit's identity. Henny Penny reveals that he is the bunny responsible for coloring Easter eggs. The Kind Farmer greets them warmly, dispelling any fears Little Jack Rabbit might have. Henny Penny expresses her distress over the hired boy stealing her eggs, prompting laughter from the farmer, who acknowledges her egg-laying habits. Cocky Doodle playfully suggests that Henny Penny should lay her eggs in the wooden nest provided for her. The Weathercock, perched high, humorously admonishes Henny Penny for her wandering, emphasizing the importance of staying home to lay eggs. The story captures themes of friendship, safety, and the whimsical interactions among farm animals, all set against the backdrop of a nurturing farm environment. The characters embody innocence and charm, creating a lighthearted tale that highlights the joys and challenges of farm life.
