In a small town near the Baltic Sea, James Dietrich raises his children, particularly his youngest, John, who is captivated by stories. Sent to his uncle's farm, John befriends a cowherd, Klas Starkwolt, who shares enchanting tales of the underground folk. On Midsummer's Eve, driven by curiosity, John ventures to the Nine-hills, where he encounters the little people and acquires one of their magical caps, granting him power over them. He explores their splendid underground realm, enjoying lavish feasts and dances, while befriending Elizabeth, a girl from his village also trapped among the little people. As they grow older, John and Elizabeth fall in love, but she longs for the surface world. Realizing their lives are unnatural, they plot their escape. John confronts the little people, demanding Elizabeth's freedom. After several failed attempts to persuade them, he discovers that a toad can compel the little folk to obey. Using this knowledge, he successfully negotiates their release, along with riches and the freedom of other captives. Emerging from the underground, John and Elizabeth return to their village, where they are celebrated. They marry, become wealthy landowners, and dedicate their lives to charity and piety, leaving a lasting legacy in their community.
