Lucia's Progress by E.F. Benson

Lucia's Progress is a novel by E.F. Benson, first published in 1935. It is the fourth book in the Mapp and Lucia series. The novel follows the continuing adventures of Emmeline Lucas (Lucia) and Elizabeth Mapp (Mapp) as they battle for social supremacy in the small English town of Tilling. After a series of events, Lucia and Mapp find themselves in a race to be the first to host a grand garden party. As the two rivals vie for the title of “Queen of Tilling”, they must also contend with the arrival of a new character, the mysterious and glamorous Mrs. Quantock. The novel is a light-hearted comedy of manners, full of witty dialogue and eccentric characters. It is a humorous look at the petty rivalries and social conventions of small-town life.
