Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann was a German Romantic writer, composer and draftsman. He is best known for his fantastical stories which often explored the human psyche and the relationship between reality and fantasy. Born on January 24, 1776, in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), Hoffmann studied law at the University of Göttingen before pursuing a career in music. He became a prominent figure in Berlin's musical scene, composing operas and chamber music. However, it was his writing that brought him lasting fame. His stories often featured themes of love, death, and the supernatural, and were characterized by their dark humor, irony, and philosophical depth. Hoffmann's work had a significant influence on the development of German Romanticism and the Gothic fiction genre. He died on June 25, 1822, in Berlin, at the age of 46.
