Fantasy Books

Fantasy is the oldest kind of story — older than the novel, older than drama, older than writing. Every culture has myths, folk tales, and fables: stories that use the impossible to say something true. What the 19th century did was begin writing fantasy as literary fiction, for adults as well as children, and the genre has been expanding ever since.

Lewis Carroll's *Alice* books (1865, 1871) are the first modern fantasies — not moral tales with a magical backdrop, but dream logic taken entirely seriously, working on its own internal rules. L. Frank Baum's Oz series built an American mythology from scratch. J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan gave English a new word for the refusal to grow up. H. G. Wells turned science-fiction speculation into fantasy architecture with *The Time Machine* and *The War of the Worlds*.

What fantasy does that realism can't: it makes the familiar strange. Every invented world is a commentary on the real one. The best fantasy isn't escape from reality — it's a way of seeing reality from far enough away to see its shape.
