The Choice by Edith Wharton (1916)

The Choice tells the story of New York socialite Gertrude Wentworth, who is faced with a difficult decision between two men: the wealthy and powerful Arthur Van Degen and the passionate and idealistic Dr. LeMoyne. Gertrude is torn between the two, as each man offers her something different. Arthur is a successful businessman who can provide her with a comfortable life, while LeMoyne is a doctor who is devoted to helping the poor and downtrodden. Gertrude must decide which man she will choose and which life she will lead. The novel follows Gertrude as she struggles to make her decision, and explores the consequences of her choice.
