Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, and designer. She was born into a wealthy family in New York City and was educated privately. She wrote her first novel, The Valley of Decision, in 1902. Her other works include The House of Mirth (1905), Ethan Frome (1911), and The Age of Innocence (1920). She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1921 for The Age of Innocence. She was also a prolific interior designer, designing homes for her friends and family. She was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She died in 1937 in France.
