In That Pup, by Ellis Parker Butler, a young boy named Jimmy is determined to get a pup of his own. He begs his parents for one, but they refuse, saying that they can't afford it. Jimmy is determined to get a pup, so he sets out to find one. He meets a man who has a litter of pups, but they are too expensive. Jimmy then meets a farmer who has a pup that he is willing to give away for free. Jimmy takes the pup home and names him Spot. Spot quickly becomes a beloved member of the family, and Jimmy learns the importance of responsibility and caring for another living creature.
