Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy (1869-1964) was a Filipino revolutionary leader and the first President of the Philippines. He was born in Cavite, Philippines, and was educated at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila. Aguinaldo was a leader in the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule, and was instrumental in the establishment of the First Philippine Republic. He was elected President of the revolutionary government in 1897, and declared Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. During the Philippine-American War, Aguinaldo led the Filipino forces against the American occupation. He was captured by American forces in 1901 and subsequently swore allegiance to the United States. Aguinaldo was a prominent figure in Philippine politics for the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Philippine Senate from 1916 to 1935, and served as a delegate to the 1934 Constitutional Convention. He died in 1964 at the age of 95.
