Emily Carr

Emily Carr (1871-1945) was a Canadian artist and writer from British Columbia. She is best known for her paintings of the Pacific Northwest landscape, which she often depicted in a modernist style. She was also a prolific writer, publishing several books of her own and contributing to many magazines. Her writing often focused on her experiences in the wilderness and her interactions with Indigenous peoples. She was a member of the Group of Seven, a group of Canadian landscape painters, and was the first woman to be elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. She was also the first Canadian woman to be given a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. Her work has been widely exhibited and is held in many public and private collections.
