The Laughing Cavalier by Emma Orczy
The novel is set in the Netherlands during the Dutch Revolt of the 16th century. It follows the adventures of Willem van der Decken, a young Dutch nobleman, and his beloved, Bess, a beautiful English girl. Willem is a passionate and daring soldier, and Bess is a brave and loyal companion. The two are separated when Willem is forced to flee the country after a failed attempt to rescue his father from Spanish captivity. He is branded a traitor and a criminal, and is forced to live in exile. Meanwhile, Bess is left behind in the Netherlands, where she is forced to marry a Spanish nobleman. Willem and Bess are reunited years later, when Willem returns to the Netherlands to fight for the Dutch cause. The novel follows Willem and Bess as they fight for their love and their country, and as they struggle to overcome the obstacles that stand in their way. It is a story of courage, loyalty, and love in the face of adversity.
