One Day at Arle

The story revolves around a young boy named Cedric Fauntleroy, who lives in New York with his mother, an American widow. His father's death has left them with limited financial means. One day, they receive news that Cedric's grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt, wants to meet him. The Earl is a wealthy and bitter old man who dislikes Americans and blames Cedric's mother for marrying beneath her station. Despite this, he decides to make Cedric his heir due to the lack of male heirs in his family.
