Francis Hopkinson Smith

Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838–1915) was an American author, artist, engineer, and inventor. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1858. He served in the Union Navy during the Civil War, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service. Smith was a prolific writer, publishing over 30 books and numerous short stories and articles. He wrote novels, biographies, travelogues, and works of history. He was also a talented artist, and illustrated many of his own books. Smith was an inventor as well, and held several patents for his inventions. He was also an engineer, and designed several bridges and other structures. Smith was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and was awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy for his contributions to literature. He died in 1915 in New York City.
