Francis La Flesche was a Omaha anthropologist and ethnographer born in 1857 to a European-American father and an Omaha mother. He studied at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and later at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his Ph.D. in anthropology. La Flesche worked as an ethnologist for the Bureau of American Ethnology and was known for his work on Native American cultures, particularly the Omaha people.
