Francisco Ximénez

Francisco Ximénez (c. 1510–1560) was a Franciscan friar and the author of the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Quiché Maya people of Guatemala. He was born in Guatemala and entered the Franciscan order in 1527. He was sent to the Quiché region to evangelize the local population and to learn their language and customs. Ximénez was the first to transcribe the Popol Vuh in the Latin alphabet, and his version is the oldest surviving manuscript of the text. He also wrote a grammar of the Quiché language and a dictionary of Quiché-Spanish. He is credited with introducing the printing press to Guatemala, and he published several books in the Quiché language. Ximénez died in 1560 in Guatemala. His work has been widely studied and has been translated into many languages.
