Born in 1874 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, to Daniel and Amelia Stein. Family moved to Paris in 1903. Studied at Radcliffe College and later at the University of Vienna. Worked as a secretary for Leo Stein's brother, William, before moving to Paris with her partner Alice B. Toklas. Established a salon that became a hub for expatriate artists and writers. Died in 1946.
