Helen Bannerman (1862–1946) was a Scottish author best known for her children's book Little Black Sambo. She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and educated at home. She married Dr. William Bannerman, a surgeon in the Indian Medical Service, and they moved to India in 1887. Bannerman wrote several books for children, including The Story of Little Black Mingo (1899), The Story of Little Black Quasha (1901), and The Story of Little Black Bobtail (1902). Her most famous work, Little Black Sambo, was published in 1899. The book was a huge success and was translated into many languages. Bannerman's books were criticized for their stereotypical depictions of people of color, and the book Little Black Sambo has been banned in some countries. Despite this, Bannerman's books remain popular and have been adapted into films, plays, and other media.
