Handel Richardson (born Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson, 3 January 1870 – 20 March 1946) was an Australian novelist. She was born in East Melbourne, Victoria, the daughter of a civil servant, and educated at home. Richardson wrote seven novels, the most famous of which is The Fortunes of Richard Mahony (1917–29). This trilogy, which follows the fortunes of a doctor who emigrates from England to Australia in the 1850s, is considered one of the finest works of Australian fiction. Richardson also wrote short stories, essays, and a biography of her father, My Father Richard Mahony (1931). She was a member of the Melbourne literary group, the Dawn and Dusk Club, and was a friend of Miles Franklin and Henry Lawson. Richardson died in 1946 in Melbourne.
