Herbert Stephen (1857-1932) was an English author and journalist. He was born in London and educated at King's College, Cambridge. He began his career as a journalist, writing for the Pall Mall Gazette and other newspapers. He later became a novelist, writing several books, including The House of the Seven Gables (1890), The Scarlet Letter (1895), and The Blithedale Romance (1899). He also wrote several plays, including The Merchant of Venice (1901) and The Tempest (1902). He was a member of the Fabian Society and a close friend of George Bernard Shaw. He died in 1932 in London.
