Horace Walpole (1717-1797) was an English writer, art historian, and politician. He is best known for his Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto (1764), which is considered the first Gothic novel in English literature. He was also a prolific letter writer, and his correspondence has been published in several volumes. Walpole was a Member of Parliament for the borough of Callington from 1741 to 1768. He was also a collector of art and antiquities, and his collection formed the basis of the collection at the British Museum. He was a close friend of the poet Alexander Pope, and his home, Strawberry Hill, was a popular gathering place for the literary and artistic elite of the day.
