Josephine Mary Callwell (1856–1935), who published as J. M. Callwell, was an Irish writer of juvenile and historical fiction and of nonfiction on Irish social history. She was the daughter of Henry Callwell and Maud Callwell, née Martin, and never married. Her notable works include Legends of Olden Times (1880), The Squire's Grandson (1888), Dorothy Arden (1889), Timothy Tatters (1890), Town and Country Mice (1891), The Rival Princes (1893), and A Champion of the Faith (1894). Her best-known title is Old Irish Life (1912, William Blackwood and Sons), a social-history account of nineteenth-century rural Ireland that remains available in reprint. Her fiction largely targeted young readers and used historical settings in medieval and early modern England, while Old Irish Life stands apart as a memoir-style survey of Irish country customs. She died on 16 February 1935 at Ballycastle, County Antrim.
