The story follows the investigation of a murder in the small English village of Chipping Cleghorn. The victim is a wealthy landowner, Sir Charles Abingdon, who is found dead in his study with a mysterious ivory god clutched in his hand. The local police are baffled by the case, and so they call in the help of amateur detective, Dr. John Thorndyke. Thorndyke is a brilliant investigator, and he soon discovers that the ivory god is the key to unlocking the mystery. As Thorndyke delves deeper into the case, he discovers a complex web of secrets and lies that leads him to a shocking conclusion.
