Jacob Riis was a Danish-American social reformer and journalist born on May 3, 1849, in Ribe, Denmark. He immigrated to the United States in 1870 and settled in New York City's Lower East Side. Riis worked as a police reporter for the New York Tribune, where he witnessed poverty and squalor firsthand. He became an advocate for social reform, using his writing and photography to expose the living conditions of the urban poor. His work led to significant changes in housing laws and regulations. Riis died on May 26, 1914.
