Jacques Futrelle (1875-1912) was an American author and journalist. He is best known for his mystery stories featuring the famous detective, Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, also known as "The Thinking Machine". Futrelle was born in Georgia and studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He began his career as a journalist, working for the Atlanta Journal and the Boston Post. He later moved to New York City, where he wrote for the New York Herald and the New York American. Futrelle wrote over 50 short stories featuring The Thinking Machine, as well as several novels. His most famous work is The Thinking Machine on the Case (1907). He also wrote several other mystery novels, including The Diamond Master (1909) and The Problem of Cell 13 (1907). Futrelle was a passenger on the ill-fated RMS Titanic, which sank in 1912. He was one of the 1,500 people who died in the disaster.
