James Fairfax (1799-1877) was an English businessman and philanthropist. He was born in London and educated at Eton College. He was a partner in the family business, Fairfax & Sons, which was a major supplier of paper to the printing industry. He was also a director of the Bank of England and a member of the Royal Society. Adalbert John Volck (1828-1912) was an American political cartoonist and lithographer. He was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1848. He was a prolific artist, producing hundreds of cartoons and lithographs that were critical of the government and slavery. He was a strong supporter of the Union during the Civil War and was arrested for his political activities. After the war, he continued to produce cartoons and lithographs, often focusing on the Reconstruction period. He was also a member of the Maryland Historical Society.
