Jan Neruda (1834-1891) was a Czech poet and journalist. He was born in Prague and studied at the Charles University in Prague. He was a member of the Czech National Revival movement and a prominent figure in the Czech literary scene. Neruda is best known for his collection of poems, Písně kosmické (Cosmic Songs), which was published in 1877. He also wrote several novels, including Vampire (1857), which is considered to be one of the earliest works of vampire fiction. His other works include the novel Povídky malostranské (Tales of the Little Quarter, 1878) and the collection of poems Básně (Poems, 1891). Neruda's works are known for their lyrical beauty and their exploration of themes such as love, death, and nature. He is considered to be one of the most important Czech poets of the 19th century.
