Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German writer, poet, and statesman. He is considered one of the greatest figures in German literature and is best known for his two-part drama Faust and his lyric poetry. Goethe was also a major influence on the Romantic movement in Germany and Europe. He was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and studied law at the University of Leipzig. He later traveled extensively throughout Europe, and his works were widely read and admired. Goethe was also a scientist, and his works on botany, anatomy, and optics were highly influential. He was a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and served as a minister in the court of Weimar. He died in Weimar in 1832.
