Born 1896 in Chicago to a wealthy family. Father was a lawyer and politician. Family moved to Virginia when John was young. He studied at Harvard University but dropped out due to poor health. Served in World War I as an ambulance driver. After the war, he worked as a journalist and began writing novels.
