John Galt (1779–1839) was a Scottish novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator. He was born on 2 May 1779 and died on 11 April 1839. His best-known work is Annals of the Parish (1821), an account of life in the west of Scotland that Sir Walter Scott pronounced excellent. He has been called the first novelist to deal with the issues of the Industrial Revolution, and the first political novelist in the English language. While travelling he struck up a friendship with Lord Byron, and that first-hand acquaintance gave particular authority to his Life of Lord Byron, published in 1830.
