John Morley (1838-1923) was an English statesman, journalist, and author. He was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, and educated at Harrow and Oxford. He was a Liberal Member of Parliament from 1883 to 1895, and served as Secretary of State for India from 1905 to 1910. Morley was a prolific writer, and his works include biographies of Edmund Burke, Voltaire, and Rousseau, as well as books on politics, philosophy, and literature. He was a strong advocate of free trade and a critic of imperialism. He was also a strong supporter of Irish Home Rule and a critic of the Boer War. He was knighted in 1908.
