Born on November 6, 1854, in Washington D.C., John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era. He is best known for his patriotic marches, particularly "The Stars and Stripes Forever". Sousa began his career as a musician at age seven, performing with the United States Marine Band. He later became its leader from 1880 to 1892. After leaving the Marines, he formed his own band and toured extensively throughout the world. Throughout his life, Sousa composed over 130 works, including marches, operettas, and concert pieces. His music is characterized by its energy, melody, and technical skill.
