John Willard (1878-1934) was an American playwright and screenwriter. He is best known for his play The Cat and the Canary, which was adapted into a successful film in 1927. Willard was born in New York City and attended Columbia University. He began his career as a journalist, but soon turned to writing plays. His first play, The Nervous Wreck, was produced in 1906. He wrote several other plays, including The Cat and the Canary, which was first produced in 1922. He also wrote several screenplays, including the adaptation of The Cat and the Canary. Willard died in 1934 in Los Angeles, California.
