José Rizal

José Rizal (1861-1896) was a Filipino nationalist and polymath during the tail end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He is widely considered the greatest national hero of the Philippines. Rizal was born in Calamba, Laguna, and studied medicine at the University of Santo Tomas. He was a prolific writer, producing numerous novels, essays, and poems. His most famous works include the novels Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo, which were critical of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. Rizal was an advocate for reform and was a vocal critic of Spanish rule. He was arrested and executed by the Spanish colonial government in 1896. His death sparked the Philippine Revolution, which eventually led to the country's independence. Rizal's legacy lives on in the Philippines, where he is remembered as a symbol of freedom and national pride. His works are still widely read and studied, and his life and death are celebrated annually on Rizal Day.
