Juan Valera y Alcalá Galiano (18 October 1824 – 29 May 1905) was a Spanish realist writer, diplomat, and politician. He was born in Cabra, Córdoba, and studied law at the University of Córdoba. He was a diplomat in various countries, including the United States, and was a member of the Spanish Parliament. Valera is best known for his novels, which are considered to be among the best examples of Spanish realist literature. His most famous works include Pepita Jiménez (1874), Juanita la Larga (1876), and Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino (1884). He also wrote several plays, short stories, and essays. Valera was a member of the Spanish Royal Academy and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III.
