Dick Sand by Jules Verne (1865)
The story follows Dick Sand, a young African-American boy who becomes the cabin boy on a whaling ship called the "Telegraph". He is taken in by the captain and learns the ways of the sea. After the captain's death, Dick takes command of the ship and navigates it through treacherous waters to reach the coast of Madagascar. Along the way, he faces numerous challenges and adventures, including encounters with pirates and a mutiny on board.
