Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan-American novelist and physician. He was born in Kabul, Afghanistan on March 4, 1965. His family fled to the United States when he was a young boy due to political unrest. He attended medical school at the University of California, San Diego and completed his residency in internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Hosseini's first novel, "The Kite Runner," was published in 2003 and became an international bestseller. It tells the story of Amir, a young boy growing up in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation, and his friendship with Hassan, a servant's son. The book explores themes of guilt, redemption, and forgiveness. He followed with "A Thousand Splendid Suns" (2007) and "And the Mountains Echoed" (2013), both bestsellers praised for their exploration of Afghan culture, history, and politics. Hosseini founded the Khaled Hosseini Foundation, which supports organizations providing medical care and education to underprivileged communities.
