Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) was an English novelist and Anglican clergyman. He is best known for his novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, which is considered one of the most influential works of the 18th century. He also wrote A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, which is considered one of the earliest examples of the novel of sensibility. Sterne was born in Clonmel, Ireland, and was educated at Cambridge University. He was ordained as a priest in 1738 and served as a curate in various parishes in Yorkshire. He was a popular preacher and was known for his wit and humor. He died in London in 1768.
