Manly Wade Wellman (May 21, 1903 – April 5, 1986) was an American writer, best known for his fantasy and science fiction stories. He wrote under his own name as well as the pseudonyms G. W. Ogden and John Thunstone. Wellman was born in the small town of Kamundongo, Angola, to American parents. He was educated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a degree in English. After college, he worked as a newspaper reporter and editor in North Carolina and Virginia. Wellman's first published story appeared in Weird Tales in 1929. He went on to write hundreds of stories for pulp magazines, including Weird Tales, Astounding Stories, Unknown, and Startling Stories. He also wrote for comic books, including the first issue of Marvel Comics' Captain America. Wellman's most famous works are his fantasy stories featuring the characters John Thunstone and Silver John. He also wrote several horror novels, including The Hanging Stones and The Devil is Not Mocked. Wellman was a prolific writer, and his works have been reprinted in numerous collections. He was awarded the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1975. He died in 1986 in North Carolina.
