Maria Bochkareva was a Russian soldier and author, best known for founding the Women's Battalion of Death during World War I. Born in 1889 in Novgorod Governorate, Russia, she joined the Russian army in 1914. After the war, she wrote her memoir, "Yashka: My Life as Peasant, Exile, and Soldier," detailing her experiences. She was executed by the Bolsheviks in 1920.
