Marshall Saunders (1897–1954) was a Canadian author and animal welfare advocate. She is best known for her novel Beautiful Joe, which was published in 1893 and became an international bestseller. Saunders was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and grew up in a family of animal lovers. She was an avid reader and wrote her first story at the age of nine. After graduating from high school, she attended Dalhousie University and then went on to study at the University of Toronto. Saunders was a passionate advocate for animal rights and wrote several books on the subject, including The Animal World (1925) and The Rights of Animals (1930). She was also a founding member of the Canadian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In addition to her work in animal welfare, Saunders wrote several novels, including The Story of a Little Dog (1902), The Story of a Cat (1904), and The Story of a Horse (1906). Her most famous work, Beautiful Joe, was published in 1893 and was an immediate success. The book was translated into more than twenty languages and was adapted into a movie in 1994. Saunders died in 1954 at the age of 57. She was posthumously inducted into the Canadian Animal Hall of Fame in 2006.
