Herous, he wrote to the doctor, urging him to visit New York and see Maddy, who, he said, was doing well in her studies and was very happy. Guy's letters to Maddy were always kind and full of interest in her progress, but he never mentioned the picture, nor did he ever send it to the doctor, who, though he sometimes wondered at its absence, never asked about it, believing that Guy had changed his mind or forgotten the matter altogether. Meanwhile, Maddy continued her studies, growing more and more into the refined, accomplished woman Guy had hoped she would become, and though she sometimes felt a pang of homesickness for Aikenside, she was content with her life in New York, knowing that it was preparing her for the future she had dreamed of, where she could be of help to her grandparents and perhaps even to Uncle Joseph.

Twenty-five years ago the people of Devonshire, a little town among the New England hills, had the reputation of being rather quarrelsome. Sometimes about meek, gentle Mrs. Tiverton, the minister's wife, whose manner of housekeeping, or style of dress, did not exactly suit them; sometimes about the minister himself, who vainly imagined that if he preached three sermons a week, attended the Wednesday evening prayer-meeting, the Thursday evening sewing society, visited all the sick, and gave to every beggar that called at his door, besides superintending the Sunday-school, he was earning his salary of six hundred per year.
